When I host during the holiday season, I do my best to make everyone feel at home and comfortable! For friends and family who have traveled hundreds of miles for the celebration or for those from just down the street, making my guests feel welcomed is a priority. I know if they are happy and content, then it makes for the entire day a memorable, peaceful event.

To create an overall sense of DELICIOUS ambiance for the gathering, I’m going to share some tips on how to prepare for a HAPPY, serene day!

The Kitchen
In most homes, the kitchen doubles as the gathering spot for new arrivals, and my home is no different. In fact, my kitchen is one great room connected to the dining area and living room. So, if your home is like mine and the front door practically opens to your kitchen, you’ll want to make sure that everything is neat and tidy when your guests arrive. Prepare as many of the main dishes and desserts as possible the night before. This will help to eliminate some of the clutter that cooking can cause.

Creating a drink & snack station where guests can help themselves will keep them satisfied and make less work for you. Just a simple flavored lemon raspberry water using doTERRA Lemon essential oil will not only taste refreshing but it also naturally cleanses the body and aids in digestion. Who doesn’t need that on Thanksgiving Day, right?

Lemon Raspberry Water Recipe:

½ lemon sliced

½ cup raspberries

20 drops doTERRA Lemon essential oil

48 ounces of water

The Living Room
When it comes to the living room, it’s all about comfort. You want your guests to feel happy and relaxed while enjoying a drink or snack with friends and family. For a cozy setting, get the fireplace going and be sure that the couch pillows have been recently fluffed and there are enough chairs set out for everyone. Fresh air is also key for a comfortable living room. Keep a diffuser in the room to promote a clean and pleasant aroma that everyone will enjoy. Try diffusing Purify. It will eradicate unpleasant odors, clear the air AND protect against environmental threats.

The Guest Room
I always felt at home visiting my parents’ house during the holidays. Not just because they are my parents and I’ve known them since I was born, but also because my mom was so good about preparing the home before I arrived. In the guest room, she always had fresh sheets and pillowcases as well as a cozy comforter that made me feel warm and loved. I always want to create that same relaxing environment for my own guests! I also recommend keeping a diffuser with Serenity in the bedroom to ensure your guests feel relaxed and comfortable. Serenity promotes relaxation and a restful sleeping environment. It calms the mind and soothes the emotions.

The Dining Room
I love making my guests feel special! I will set the dinner table before they arrive with a festive centerpiece and place settings to create a warm and merry environment. Because there is such a large group of children that come, I make a table along with some activities specifically for them to enjoy. Using name cards will help your guests feel welcomed and allow for a smoother transition from the living room to the dinner table when the meal is ready.

The Bathroom

Not many people might think about making the bathroom a comfortable space, but let’s not ignore that guests will frequent that room a few times a day during their stay! Making sure it’s clean and stocked with hand soap, towels and toilet paper is a must. I always get compliments when I use the OnGuard Hand Soap, and guests love to spray the DIY Natural Bathroom Spray I leave on the back of the toilet.

DIY Natural Bathroom Spray Recipe

1/2 cup distilled water

1 tablespoon real vanilla extract

1 teaspoon vegetable glycerine (not absolutely necessary but helps create the physical barrier)

20 drops lavender essential oil

15 drops orange essential oil

Note: You can use any essential oils of your choice (aim for around 24-36 drops). Citrus and pine are another nice combination for a fresh, clean scent.

Bathroom Spray Instructions

Combine the ingredients in a glass spray bottle or one specially made to hold essential oils. (Essential oils don’t do well in plastic bottles) and spritz on the toilet water before you go. To stop bathroom odors before they start, shake spray before each use. Spritz directly into the toilet bowl to create a film over the water. This will help trap stinky smells below the water after you or your guests do their business. 😊

Whatever you do, plan ahead so that not only will your guests feel Serenity and Peace on this special holiday, but that you will too because you aren’t stressed about doing too many things on Thanksgiving Day! May you have a wonderful Holiday Season!
